Isn’t that how life is, though? We can waste countless minutes stressing and focusing our attention on meaningless things while in an infinitesimal fraction of that time a life can be taken.

Finnick’s death began when he got reaped for the game. He spends an entire book and much more dying, not just a sentence. In fact, all the characters enter in a downward slope that continues throughout the three books, that is, all except for Katniss. While the games affect almost everybody in a negative way, they actually cause Katniss to arise. She had a shitty life and was a shitty person before the games (albeit explicable by her past and the general shittiness of her life). But after the games, she becomes aware of others and realizes that its not just prim that needs her help.
